The Railway Unions are currently locked in dispute with Train Operators over staffing levels.  The TOCs want to dispense with the Guard, leaving the Driver with complete responsibility.

However, a shocking incident calls everything into question:

"Woman Dragged Along Platform By Train"

A Rail Accident Investigation Board spokesman said: "Our investigation identified that the train driver and other railway staff held the same misunderstanding: if someone had a hand trapped in a door it would not be possible for the door interlock light to illuminate and a driver to take power.  "This is not the case, and the door was found to be compliant with all applicable standards after the accident."  The report said it was essential that station staff, guards or train drivers, performed a thorough final safety check to confirm it was safe for the train to depart.
