The gradual destruction and right-wing bias of the BBC

Post by witchfinder on Sun Nov 27, 2011 6:34 pm

The BBC is to be made to suffer due to the failures of private funded commercial television, in a series of government policies aimed at smashing the BBC and forcing the quality down, the latest announcements have gone almost unoticed.

A new kind of TV station is coming soon to the UK, "City TV" will be a a very localized kind of TV station which will have coverage areas similar to local radio stations, often covering just one city like Manchester, Liverpool or Glasgow, though some will cover two or three neighbouring towns, like Newcastle + Sunderland or Leeds + Bradford for example.

Part of the start up costs and initial funding of these new commercial TV stations will come from the BBC, which actualy makes me extremely angry because many of us who live in more rural areas will never recieve one of these new stations, yet we will be paying towards them - WHY ?

Why is public money been used to help a private commercial concern to become viable ?

THE PREASSURE WHICH THE BBC SUDENLY FINDS ITSELF IN

The licence fee has been frozen for six years - resulting in a massive real terms cut

The BBC is been forced to take over all the funding of the World Service

The BBC is been made to fund the whole of "Monitoring Services" which was partly funded by the government

The BBC must contribute to the running costs of Channel S4C, the Welsh language channel

The BBC must contribute to the setting up of and initial running costs of the new City TV stations

Everyone keeps saying how much money this will save, not least the chancellor George Osborne, but no one seems to mention how quality and output will deterioate and worsen, the fact that we are going to sacrifice the quality of the BBC in the name of savings has never been mentioned.

Allready it has been announced only this week that many BBC local stations will merge output, effectively losing the local element to local radio, so whats the point of local radio if its NOT local. ?

Naturaly this will give the commercial stations an advantage, that is if you dont mind listening to a choir singing about a local drain cleaning company, or some DJ telling you that now is the time to buy your Christmas gifts - on the 1st November.

Soon the BBC will stop making programmes for daytime viewers, as a result of the financial preassure forced on the BBC by this government, day time viewing will in future consist mostly of repeats.

I suspect that the government is attempting to drive the BBC down to levels associated with SKY, a tv network which makes no tv programmes and where public service means nothing, or possibly they wish to make the BBC like ITV - a network so strapped for cash that they no longer make childrens programmes and can barely afford to carry on providing local news.

The conspiracy to destroy the BBC is regularly joined by that fount of heroically even-handed reporting, The Sun, which calls it the 'Biased Broadcasting Corporation'.

The BBC is biased to the extent that it fails to broadcast propaganda favouring the Tories and instead outrageously restricts itself to reporting news which is factual and non-partisan, whether it offends any or all of the political parties. But Cameron's Government Ministers do not like being asked awkward questions . Not one bit.

If we allow the BBC to be dismantled in the interests of a Conservative Party which will tolerate no dissent from any quarter, we are truly on a slope even slippier than Mr Slippy in his slippers slipping on some particularly slippery stuff ...

Over the past five years, the analog Television broadcasts in the UK have been replaced by (totally different) digital transmissions.
The cost to consumers has been considerable, and the cost to the BBC ran to many millions.
In the same period, SKY has trebled the number of its subscribers, and is the single dominant provider of Sports broadcasting.

Almost makes you believe in conspiracy theories, doesn't it?

What it means it that ITV / Tyne Tees will have yet another competitor looking for advertising revenue, the revenue which is increasingly difficult to find because there are more and more outlets competing for the revenue.

This allready has forced quality down, as you know ITV North East now shares local news at weekends with the Border region, the seperate news programmes for the north and south of the region were shelved, there is allready talk of ITV doing away with local news alltogether.

It has been announced this week that BBC Tees is to merge some programming with BBC Newcastle, no one here in North Yorkshire is in the slightest bit interested in what goes on in Newcastle, Blyth or Morpeth, they may as well do away with local radio alltogether.

Witchy, you and I know that there is only SO much money in this country. It is no good the Gubmint trying to spend more and more, and I think that at last the sheeple are turning into "Consumers". The next thing will be the BBC going 'commercial@ yet again, there is only so much money in this country, the rest is sloshing around in offshore bank accounts!

Indeed, the chancellor is looking for billions of private money for his ideas as will be announced tomorrow, and this money will by the look of it be difficult to raise. The Pension funds were hammered by previous administrations, so why should they be so keen to make another profit only to have it hoisted farther down the line?

Just like the quadrupling of our overseas aid burden, this Government are still going to give away (despite we the taxpayer opposing), The last thing the Beeb will get rid of is the Overseas Services, again something we the British people pay for. When we are supposedly skint, how come we can fund all of this overseas help, where is the dosh coming from, or perhaps we arent as skint as they keep telling us, but need what cash there is to fullfill their purely Ideological aims. Herr Cameron keeps talking about transparency, well its about time he practiced what he preaches. If we are broke there is no way he can justify giving our money to any other Country, or can the Beeb justify a Foreign Service when our home services are made up of repeats and crap.

Indeed we cannot possibly be as skint as they keep telling us. Part of the Treasury's Income has always come from offering investment products to the general public. Savings Certificates, Government Bonds (Gilts), Monthly-interest Deposit accounts, Index-linked Bonds and Premium Bonds.

Enquire now about investing in the National Savings and Investment organisation and you will find that the ONLY possibility is Premium Bonds.

ALL other Government Investments are CLOSED to new business.

I simply argue in defence of the quality of the BBC, and allthough I fully understand that the BBC must join in with the rest of society and make some sacrifices, I feel that if we take take take from the BBC, then eventualy we will all see a difference in quality.

For people such as those who post on these message boards, could any of them name a set of tv programmes on either ITV or Sky that match the quality of Question Time, Newsnight or Panorama ? - No because the commercial channels only make "cheap" programmes these days, which does not mean quality programmes.

"Who pulls the strings at the BBC?"
by Pam Field.

What is happening at the BBC? We are kept well informed about the goings-on in the Falkland Islands. Is that a coincidence in that as I remember it was the flag-waving and cheering of the departing ships which led to a recovery for Thatcher in 1982 when the public-service cuts were hitting hard?

The BBC inform us of the coming-and-goings of managers of football clubs, and then about complaints from Christians about being marginalised. I am unsure as to why the BBC should be a voice for religious groups – isn’t that what churches are for?

While all this is going on, the most unpopular policies in recent years go unreported by the BBC, and by much of the press.

When all the Political Parties complain about BBC coverage of the News, we can be fairly confident that they've got the balance about right.

With the Murdoch star currently waning, may we expect less political interference with the best broadcasting service the World has?

Applying to be in the audience of 'BBC Question Time'

Post by Scarecrow on Fri Feb 24, 2012 1:09 am

Apply to be in the audience of BBC Question Time. The vetting/screening of applicants is completely intrusive. Particuarly questions 6,7,9 and 10 that can be seen here,

6. What is your opinion of the situation in Afghanistan?
7. Are you pro-EU or sceptical?
9. If there were a General Election tomorrow, which political party would you be most likely to vote for?
10. Do you fully support the leader of that party?

Why are those questions asked? Perhaps it is so they can show they choose people in a balanced way and can back this up with the records of the people who apply. I'd like to see how many people are chosen who vote Tory, as opposed to the number of people who vote for other parties. Whilst I understand some audiences will be more for a certain party than others depending on location, but I would like to see some open records of how many of each party are selected. This information should be transparently reported at the start of each show. This should take no more than 20 seconds for Dimbleby to read out.

They have a statement saying that they invite a balanced cross section of people, and if that is true, then allowing the figures to be independently verified should not be an issue.

Whilst I feel it is most important for the BBC to have balanced gender numbers on TV, the issue of transparency is perhaps more prevelant.

BBC is a unique institution unduplicated anywhere in the world. Its documentaries and news coverage is unrivaled in quality and integrity. I would be more wont to praise the BBC for a job well done and encourage those entrusted with carrying on its noble traditions to keep course than to criticize every little detail.

Don't believe it? Have a look at and a listen to our once-proud nationwide broadcast news outlets, the American Broadcasting Company (ABC), the National Broadcasting Company (NBC), and the venerable Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS), and compare their current output to BBC's nightly news, and you might take deserved pride in the stellar institution with which your nation has gifted the world.

£145.50 a year is what a UK TV licence costs , dont forget the £500,000,000 that comes out of our taxes to fund BBC Worldwide . The BBC has consistently displayed a Leftwing/liberal bias for some years now. A departing programme manager claimed that The Guardian is the managements bible, and you would have thought that a migration north to Manchester would perfectly in keeping with their principles, but judging by the vociferous internal protests, and resignations it seems these "deeply held" fabian beliefs can only survive in leafy London suburbs.

Can an organisation in which Chris Patten, Andrew Neil, Michael Portillo, Jeremy Clarkson and Nick Robinson have such major roles ever be anything other than a Tory club? When a journalist at ‘The Daily Mail’ implies that the BBC has been silenced by this Tory government, you might wish to reconsider your remark. Sonia Poulton writes:-

"Last year over 1,000 sick people were deemed fit for work died and 105 others are known to have committed suicide. Why then has the BBC not made a song and dance about all these deaths? Stories that include thousands of people dying in controversial circumstances are not, generally, considered newsworthy. Although 'Pastygate' is.

How many Lords and MPs have investments in private medical companies and will stand to benefit from the recent NHS reforms that they voted in. That's news. Surely. No? What not even the notion that their votes could be based on personal considerations rather than national interest? No. And no again. I believe such involvements warrant the spotlight shining on them and news prominence given because it is a widescale and cancerous corruption at the heart of our democratic decision-making process.

At a last-ditch rally to save the NHS prior to privatisation, people sang songs and called for a pause in reforms so that a thorough Risk Assessment could take place....yet members of the Metropolitan Police were walking among the crowds and brandishing machine guns. Weapons of catastrophic destruction were issued to keep order for people who were behaving in a law-abiding manner. Where was our national news channel in reporting this? And why isn't it bristling and indignant that our human rights are infringed for something that looks less like democracy and more like martial law?"

For the co-owners of BBC who do not understand how much of a blessing your network’s journalistic integrity is to people who otherwise would be dependent upon ABC (American Broadcasting Company) for our news.

US Navy F-18 crashes in residential Virginia

A US Navy F-18 jet has crashed shortly after take off in a residential area near Virginia Beach, Virginia.

A navy spokesman told the BBC that the plane went down just before 12:08 (16:08 GMT) and two crew members ejected safely

Witnesses told local media that just before the crash they saw the plane empty its fuel tank.

Bruce Nedelka, a Virginia Beach emergency official said that fuel was found on buildings and vehicles in the area.

"By doing so, he [the pilot] mitigated what could have been an absolute massive, massive fireball and fire," Mr Nedelka told the Associated Press.

"With all of that jet fuel dumped, it was much less than what it could have been."

Wonder how ABC News missed those details, which show the two naval aviators’ courage and commitment to the safety of civilians, on its ABC Nightly News with whoever national broadcast? BBC got it right from across the pond; ABC couldn’t get it right from across the Chesapeake Bay.

Rock. In her article, Sonia Poulton acknowledges that the BBC is very good about reporting the news overseas. For example, she says “we get to hear about foreign lands and how corporate power has been allowed to buy the parliamentary process - but we don't get the full picture of how it has been allowed to happen here as well.”

Here is a well researched but shocking article about the lack of impartiality of the BBC these days:-

'How the BBC betrayed the NHS: an exclusive report on two years of censorship and distortion' by Oliver Huitson

"In the two years building up to the government’s NHS reform bill, the BBC appears to have categorically failed to uphold its remit of impartiality, parroting government spin as uncontested fact, whilst reporting only a narrow, shallow view of opposition to the bill. In addition, key news appears to have been censored."

Nobody is likely to be surprised to hear that this spiteful Coalition has decided to starve the BBC of funds for things like the World Service, something which is like the Prophet, not without honour, except in his own country, and among his own.
Governments of all hue have at some time or another accused the BBC of bias, which suggests that they must have got something right.

Any Brit who has ever been abroad knows just how awful Broadcasters can be in other countries, but commercial pressure from you-know-who has found ready ears in our corrupt and self-serving administration.

Finally, we now know why the BBC refuse to report the NHS carve-up!

by Dr Éoin Clarke

The BBC should report it when:

Private Health Firms taking over our NHS operate from Tax Havens.
Private Health Firms donate to the Tory Party.
Private Health Firms Directors are linked to the Tory Party.
Private Health Firms fail health inspections carried out by the CQC.

Since April 2011, Lord Patten has been the head of the BBC, under the suggestion of David Cameron.

Lord Patten is a board member of Bridgepoint who own Care-UK.
Lord Patten is the former Chairman of the Tory Party.
Bridgepoint (Care-UK) operate from a tax haven and use loan notes issued on the Channel Island Stock Exchange.
Bridgepoint (Care-UK) have donated £400,000+ to the Tories.
Bridgepoint (Care-UK) have failed 9 CQC inspections in the last 12 months and the BBC reported none of them. The BBC used to report Care-UK failings in 2009 when Labour was in power, or if the failings occurred in a SNP Scotland, but it does not now report Care-UK failings in England.

BBC bias

Post by boatlady on Fri Feb 01, 2013 3:25 pm

It's quite hard for the party in opposition to be doing their work of critiquing the incumbent government's policies without sounding like a gang of negative whingers, isn't it?
I guess the fact that the popular press and the BBC seem to be solidly behind this government makes it even harder for Ed Milliband to present the Labour case in a coherent and convincing way, but there have been a good few occasions when this government has been caught out in lies and various corrupt practices when the Labour response has been far too polite and gentlemanly for my taste.

Re: The gradual destruction and right-wing bias of the BBC

To its eternal credit, the BBC does still report news accurately and in a balanced way- including that inconvenient to the government - despite the obvious risks in so doing .

It is only a matter of time before the Tories become so threatened by the truth, however, that they will start to put pressure on the Beeb to broadcast more 'Coalition-friendly' items. At that point we shall know that real desperation has crept in and Cameron feels the heat in the kitchen is becoming unbearable.

Overall, has there ever been a more detestable government...?
