Thatcher changed Britain for the worse - Page 18 Empty Thatcher changed Britain for the worse

Post by Ivanhoe Sun Dec 11, 2011 3:29 pm

First topic message reminder :

Through the Thatcher Major, years, millions of British people were made poor as a matter of policy, while others got rich as a matter of policy.

Blair and Brown embraced Thatcherism due to the change in the British, and now Milliband wants to change Labour again due to a changed Britain.

I personally long for a political party that sticks to it's core values, that has conviction, that does not change itself to suit a greedy selfish uncaring British populas who'se only thought is "self". In my view this "self" is mainly among the British middle classes.

Thatcher changed Britain for the worse, and now we are reaping through this dreadful coalition, what has been sown.

Debt is good because we buy washing machines on credit.
.... and the people who sell washing machines are not a burden on the State.

Neither are the Road Carriers who distribute said washing machines. Likewise the advertising agencies that encourage the Public to purchase such machines, and the Media that earn money from advertising (including all their employees), the Retailers, and the Financiers who make easy terms available.

The only entity not benefitting from the sale of goods on credit terms is the miserable git standing on the sidelines bitching about something which they don't understand.

Somebody will no doubt tell me if I HAVE NOT MADE MYSELF CLEAR.

It is clear you do not understand the free market or debt, and before I crush your ignorance of basic economics I must point out one glaring irony.

We have a commie proposing debt laden materialism and consumerism as a socialist policy, now that is funny, you are certainly one of Thatcher's children.

Anyway back to reality, you seem to be under the delusion that debt creates sustainable jobs and profits, well it does not. If everyone buys a washing machine on credit which they cannot afford to pay because of a deficit in earnings then there is no profit and no sustainable jobs, its called Greece. Earnings and taxes from government spending are not profits, it is just debt circulating through the system, the taxes paid by a public sector worker is not adding one penny to the profitability of this country. Our internal market is not big enough to sustain the services we have guaranteed to our citizens, we need to earn profits and spending debt is not the answer, the answer is exports and the taxes/jobs from competitive private industries.

Your solution is to move onto fridges, then tumble dryers then dishwashers etc etc, your economic strategy for this countries indebtedness is to increase the debt, its just economic servitude.

Credit is ok if you can afford it, we can't because we are in debt.

Now go away and learn some basic economic realities, capitalism is Darwinian and the world operates on capitalistic principles, we cannot escape our planet, but you seemingly have you rocket.

Thatcher slapped the socialists in the face with one economic punch, the state cannot create profit out of debt, it may be able to create jobs but they are not sustainable because of our small domestic market. The evidence for this is 13 years of Labour where debt financed growth and jobs, and now we are just left with the debt.

Follow the Germans, create more wealth and keep a surplus for rainy days, then you don't have the Banks, IMF and Credit Rating Agencies telling your democratic government how to run your country.

Tosh,

Since '79, and the subsequent 30+ yrs of neo-liberal unfettered freemarket capitalism, we appear to be in more debt and less capable of economic growth now than we were pre-thatcherite notions of dog eat dog capitalism.. Do you agree? If not - why not?

I do not agree, simply take Britain's debt and growth spiral of 1979 and extend it for 34 years, we would be freakin Cuba, if you lot keep on digging you will be in Cuba. 34 years of loss making nationalised industries and countless strikes would have turned the sick man of Europe into the terminally ill man of Europe, there would be no foreign investment in our country....none.

My shovel is called Germany and it buries all your myths that capitalism or the free market increases debt and reduces growth.

Your turn, please provide a left wing socialist country that has no debt, a surplus and economic growth, I will wait here forever while you go off planet to find one.

The corruption and inhumanity under Thatcher knew no borders

From an article by John Pilger:-

When she came to power in 1979, Thatcher demanded a total ban on exports of milk to Vietnam. The American invasion had left a third of Vietnamese children malnourished. I witnessed infants going blind from a lack of vitamins. Oxfam and Save the Children had made clear the gravity of the emergency. An embargo led by the USA had forced up the local price of milk.

In neighbouring Cambodia, Thatcher left a trail of blood, secretly. In 1980, she demanded that the defunct Pol Pot regime - the killers of 1.7 million people - retain its ‘right’ to represent their victims at the UN. Her policy was vengeance on Cambodia's liberator, Vietnam. The UK voted with Pol Pot at the World Health Organisation, preventing it from providing help to where it was most needed on earth.

The USA, Britain and China invented a ‘resistance coalition’ dominated by Khmer Rouge forces and supplied by the CIA at bases along the Thai border, but in the wake of the Irangate arms-for-hostages debacle, Congress had banned clandestine foreign adventures. Reagan suggested that the SAS should take over the Cambodia show; Thatcher readily agreed and in 1983 sent the SAS to train the ‘coalition resistance fighters’ in laying minefields in a country devastated by genocide.

Over 16,000 people wrote to Thatcher in protest. "I confirm," she replied to Neil Kinnock, "that there is no British government involvement of any kind in training, equipping or co-operating with the Khmer Rouge or those allied to them." The lie was breathtaking. In 1991, Major admitted to Parliament that the SAS had indeed trained the ‘coalition’.

The Election Day Disaster
(With apologies to William McGonagall)

Just 8% was our VAT
And prescriptions cost just 20p
When Thatcher said she’d set us free
Meaning fewer jobs for you and me
After the election day of 1979
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.

Those promises were just a spoof
For inflation went right through the roof
But Thatcher just remained aloof
And made up policies on the hoof
After the election day of 1979
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.

Then Howe sped on with all his might
Keeping the money supply very tight
As he dragged the UK to the right
The Friedman dream was well in sight
After the election day of 1979
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.

As fewer people were now earning
Our inner cities soon were burning
For change most people had a yearning
But Thatcher was still not for turning
After the election day of 1979
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.

The Falklands were to be cast aside
Then Thatcher chanced to turn the tide
900 lives lost to save her pride
Meaning ’83 was an easy ride
Because of that election day in 1979
Which will be remember’d for a very long time.

Tosh. I have a feeling we’ve been through all this before….. Sleep

Yes, Thatcher did so much for this country, turning it from your “industrial dinosaur” into an industrial wasteland, increasing inequality at a faster rate than at any time in our history, and helping to turn Britain into the 7th largest economy in the world when it was the 4th richest previously. Her legacy is that youngsters can’t get a job and can’t afford to buy a home, the social housing stock has been decimated, more children than ever are living in poverty and 500,000 people are reliant on food banks.

Meryl Streep won an Oscar for that impersonation of a British PM which you watched last night. Surely it can’t be long before Cameron is given his?

The dreaded woman sold off the council houses pretending to give tenants a chance to buy. The real reason was to satisfy certain Tory councils who were unhappy at coughing up for repairs and the cost of rent collection.
Similar con by Cameron to be seen to be helping the
young get on the property ladder with the deposit scheme, when in fact the reason is to assist his wealthy building companies with more building business. No doubt they will be employing cheap labour to shove them up as quickly and as cheaply as possible.
It is all about greed and profit as it was with Thatcher. "make money any way you can" she said, even if it meant at the expense of fellow workmen and women.
Because she decimated our manufacturing base along with the mines, she realised the great loss of revenue to the Exchequer from tax income and therefore along with her friend Reagan, de-regulated the financial sector to make up for the losses.
Hence the beginning of the Global Crisis, where she allowed the banks to engage in bank to bank lending at home and internationally, knowing full well that tough regulation is not possible and yet de-regulation would be welcomed with open arms.

The Witch is the reason we are so much in the 5hit today,in more ways than one, where greed and profit is good and is now sadly part of our life.
She taught dog eat dog attitude, one can see it clearly every single day.

Not to mention selling to the Public shares in Companies that were already in Public Ownership.

The Police use very ugly words to describe such activity when carried out by an individual not enjoying parliamentary privilege.

Ah!!! indeed ow, there is much more if we had the time and the space. For example, paving the way for her beloved son Mark to become a wealthy gun runner and dropping her drawers to become the Finchley MP in the early times and admitting she married for money.

It is up to Ed Miliband to latch on to news such as we have seen in the past few days, in order to paint a picture for the British voter of what Toryism is all about - and why it needs to be dispensed with.

But can he do it?  There is ample fertile ground upon which to discredit Cameron and his Nasties. Any failure to do so will be a failure of Miliband himself, and a betrayal of the people of this country.

SO GET ON WITH IT, ED...!

There are people in the Labour Party ready to speak out, but the typical voter can't remember anything previous to last weekend, so it may well be sensible to make the truth evident a bit closer to May 2015.

Labour Peer Baroness Kennedy wrote in today's Independent,
"Society has not become more democratic. Real power is in the hands of only a few people. Members of the general public feel that the financial and corporate world dictates terms to the political class. Whilst their own voices are not heard they see no point in voting and feel increasingly disengaged."

I don't disagree that the typical British voter needs to brush up in the memory department- after all, look what they did last time round!

But there is also something to be said for a  Labour strategy of mimicking the constant drip, drip propaganda that the same public is fed by the likes of the Daily Mail and The Sun - each of which is not even fit to be ripped up ready for more productive use in the outside privy...

In the gentlemanly debate customary on this Cutting Edge social network the ad hominem style of personal attack is rightly eschewed, but our luminary Mr. Hornby may readily be supported in suggesting that the gloves should come off when dealing with such slime as are encountered clinging to the levers of power in Coalition.

How difficult can it be to remind the voting public of the less attractive aspects of the current administration?

Today alone, our Prime Minister has made an ELECTION PLEDGE to the Nation's pensioners, standing alongside his previous election pledges on the NHS, University fees, Sure Start, expulsion of foreign criminals, the "Cast-iron" EU referendum etcetera, etc., etc.

Why We Still Hate Thatcher

“Over the course of her 11 years in office, Thatcher embarked on a systematic destruction of the state and created a ‘me first’ culture based entirely around the free market, stripped workers of their rights and pursued mass privatisation. If there was ever a politician to hate, it was Margaret Thatcher.

Thatcher’s commitment to dismantling the unions was outstripped only by her commitment to dismantling the state, showing an open disdain for collective effort and those receiving support from the government and instead promoting a society based around individualism and greed.

The imposition of free market capitalism at any cost was chief among Thatcher’s concerns. Britain was put up for sale to the highest bidder and the public sector was dismantled with ruthless efficiency. Thatcher used mass-privatisation to engineer a culture of ‘who can get richest the quickest’, with the cost of vital services like utilities and levels of employment now influenced entirely by profit. Thatcher fostered greed where collectivism once stood.

Although Thatcher has gone, Thatcherism lives on, with Cameron and Osborne showing the same disdain for the public sector and the poor and in thrall to the whims of big corporations and the privileged. And as long as Thatcherism lives on, there is still reason to hate Thatcher.”

Interesting take on how Britain compares to Norway in terms of what we've done with the North Sea oil money, which is somewhat topical in light of the fracking controversy. I would imagine Cameron and Co. have similar plans to those which Thatcher initiated in relation to any potential windfall.
Edit: Sorry, I meant to post this link:

It was the North Sea Oil bonanza that allowed a Tory government to "buy peace" from the newly-unemployed workers (in particularly the North-East) with generous Benefits. Which Thatcher's successors are now desperately intent on rolling back.

Exactly. Thatcher had the benefit of £78 billion in oil revenues and £65 billion from the proceeds of her various privatisations. Yet the vile old harridan still managed to leave office - after eleven and a half years - with both unemployment and inflation higher than when she came to power on her 'Labour isn't working' lie.

If anyone bores you with that tired old myth about Tories being better than Labour at running the economy, remind them of those facts. Then talk about 'Black Wednesday' of September 1992.  What a Face

I blame the electors of Finchley, but Thatcher was not initially the obvious replacement for the deflated Edward Heath, though she eventually became the main challenger, promising a fresh start. Her main support came from the Conservative 1922 Committee, but Thatcher's time in office gave her the reputation of a pragmatist instead of an ideologue. She defeated Heath on the first ballot and he resigned the leadership. In the second ballot she defeated Whitelaw, Heath's preferred successor. The vote polarized along right-left lines, with in addition the region, experience and education of the MP having their effects. Thatcher was stronger among MPs on the right, those from southern England, and those who had not attended public schools or Oxbridge.

Thatcher became party leader and Leader of the Opposition on 11 February 1975 by a vote of the Parliamentary Conservative Party. No British elector had any part in her becoming PM.
