The credit crunch, a global crisis or not ?

This was the title of the longest running, active subject on the now discontinued MSN message boards, and when those boards were discontinued the thread was transferred to the newly created Cutting Edge board in March 2011.

OK so who will begin then ? ( Mark III )

Post by Phil Hornby Fri Oct 07, 2011 8:08 pm

So, there I was wondering what to do with life, now that Cutting Edge had been pulled. I had visions of spending all my days in the Pease Pottage Conservative Club, admiring the portrait of Margaret Thatcher and imagining what she would look like on a barbeque spit with an apple in her mouth. And then, out of the blue, came salvation in the shape of this new opportunity to spread the gospel to the masses of just how good it is to have a Tory government. I shall spare no effort in putting the case for them in the coming days. As always... tongue

Where were we before the proboard baby broke wind?

With all the banks being credit downgraded, does this mean that those with money in HSBC or Barklays are reasonably safe to ride the tidal wave that is coming?

Of course it's Global (now), look a the economic giants that spent all those years, well spending everything we had and didn't have. I doubt any of the past government could pass a GCSE in economics. Exclamation

Hello all.

It's like the not so big society.

So who did what to get the other boards closed this time?

Did "Bootsie" finally appear?

And I see that Mr Hornby is still showing his eternal support for the Conservatives. tongue

Hello ko1. Thanks for joining us. No, old bootsie never joined us, and we can only speculate on why we were closed down. Two other boards were closed - one for continually posting objectionable content and libel, and the other probably because its membership partially overlapped with the rogue forum. However, I don't think we should dwell on all that here - or we might be considered to be behaving in a similar way!

Hello Ivan

Wasn't on the other boards for some time, bit busy of late, so wouldn't know what sort of stuff was being posted.

Sounds like a bit comunist styled censorship is alive and well on the internet. silent

The UK is now in a worse situation than in 2008, why????

The quantitative easing has had no effect whatsoever.

Before the election, Cameron and Gideon were blaming Brown for the crisis,
refusing for political gain to agree that it was a Global Crisis.

Now having blamed the weather, Greece and an abundance of other excuses
as to why we have no growth and no improvement in the countries economic
situation, including higher unemployment, higher inflation, fear hitting the
spending in the high streets.

Tory ideology is putting this country at risk of collapse, perhaps even worse
that in the thirties. Now all we hear is that the problem is "Global one" from
Gideon and Camercon. How rich is that??

My favourite "Gideon Quote" is the one in which he stated,
Quantitative Easing is the last resort of desperate governments.
That was in 2009, from the opposition benches.

A disgraceful slur, Mel. You will be hearing from my solicitor and the Bishop.

We may consider ourselves fortunate indeed to have access to such a wealth of experience from within the membership. Perhaps Cutting Edge contains the nucleus of an alternate Health Service if Tory Will prevails on that front.

I wonder to what extent the change of deflator has played a role in changing the real GDP data. In fact the ONS explain this might have had an impact and the change in real GDP in the early 2000s of about 0.6% is consistent with most economist appraisal of the difference between the RPI and CPI measures. The peak-to-trough fall in GDP during recession is now put at 7.1% from an estimate of 6.4% previously. The new figures suggest the economy was already deep in recession before the fall of Lehman Brothers in September 2008: GDP fell by 1.3% in the second quarter of 2008 and by 2% in the third quarter, much larger declines than had previously been estimated.
It's very interesting that now, years later, reported economic numbers from the past are being altered and are now more accurate. Maybe it is a good thing that at the time the people were unaware of how hard the economy was falling.
Looks to me as though things were worse than we first thought.

Things could only be better than we thought if people at the time had understood that spending next years' wages before you got them could end in tears.
