What's your reaction to the Ricky Gervais programme 'Derek'?

Post by sickchip on Fri Apr 13, 2012 7:30 pm

There as been much criticism, and some praise; what do you think?

My opinion is this:

Derek was a horrible programme that employed faux pathos and emotion in a manipulative manner for effect. It's hard to believe the likes of Gervais, Walliams, and Lucas have any genuine empathy for societies outsiders......they appear to use them only to further their own careers and seem to enjoy, a little too much, and have no qualms about, personally profiting on the back of exploiting these less fortunate souls' perceived inadequacies and misery.

Humans have always found entertainment in the misfortunes of others. Freak shows are the staple of travelling fairs, a tradition kept alive by Channel 4 with "Embarrassing bodies" or Channel 5 with "The big body squad".

They wouldn't put them on if there wasn't a public demand.

Well I haven't watched it, I've watched 5 seconds worth of the office and that was enough for me. I can't stick that Gervais fella...he's about as funny as standing in dog plop! Ew! Odious little man!

Adele. I haven't seen 'Derek' either, and I'm no great fan of Ricky Gervais, but surely you will laugh at this piece of cringe:-

Even at this relatively early stage of her posting career on this board, it seems clear that Ms Carlyon has the bon mots in describing those things and people of whom she disapproves. More, more, more...! cheers

One must hope that they are only serving Coca Cola and Cream Soda at that school reunion or heaven knows about what goings-on we shall eventually be regaled... Very Happy

Adele. The only bar you're likely to see tonight is the one serving the drinks at the school reunion! To get barred from this forum is about as difficult as getting a Tory to tell the truth. You have to break the law (or be very rude about Reverend Hornby's Pease Pottage Conservative Club blog), and it still requires a majority of the five moderators to vote in favour of showing you the door, even for just a few days. Racists get kicked out very quickly though!

We aim to practise 'light touch' moderation. However, Francis Maude thought we said 'light match', invited us not to panic and then turned up with his jerry can of petrol.

Although not wishing to poop anybody's party, my lovely wife assures me that old-school reunions inevitably revolve around photos of other people's children.

Must be more fun to be had from weaving a tapestry.

Ricky Gervais is my hero and I think he's a bit of a genius.

Derek wasn't as good as The Office, Extras, or Ricky's stand-up, but I found it enjoyable and not exploitative.

I think he does care about people on the margins of society, and I think it's clear through all of his work that he's keen to eradicate prejudice.

I guess I'm the only one, but I thought I'd state my opinion! lol

Ricky Gervais is a Crusader who hopes to point out the errors of our ways through humour. Holding a mirror up to ourselves is rarely funny, however.

He needs to try another schtick.

I like his schtick though. I suppose when people stop watching, he'll have to stop doing it.
