21st century genocide in Sudan: Where do you stand?

The World is full of injustice. Africa in particular was shown spectacular cruelty by the European colonial powers engaged in the Slave Trade, and then later, in the XIX Century, when its mineral wealth was exploited. The entire native population of Belgian Congo had the choice of mining or die. In the modern era there have been horrible examples in Ruanda of man's inhumanity to man, Idi Amin in Uganda, anarchy in Somalia, tinpot "Emperors" leeching on former French colonies, and the above "civil wars" not Civil but religious - another consequence of European missionaries' imposition of new beliefs.

China is taking an intense interest now in Africa, as a source of raw materials, and may yet have a benign effect on local warfarers for reasons of self-interest.

Simply they should try to re erect the local councils to avoid further violence, but this costs money. These councils should be set up by clay huts and volunteers. What they have to gain is experience in this sort of thing, and maybe they could recieve bursaries from the west to do some distance learning with. This could come through a 'charity' from the colledge, and then they could recieve recognition, maybe they could even host an awards ceremony for them in the country and recieve even more recognition.

I doubt they would be abolished again.

The British could not sort this place out in Victorian times, could not sort out Afganistan either, come to think of it.

What makes anyone think diplomacy over a cup of tea is going to make any difference?

Rather than rush in wasting billions and untold lives, invest in brushes and shovels and wait.........when it all calms down, go in and clean up.

LIke many other areas, Sudan has had a complicated history, to put it into a demographic nutshell, the South of the country is mostly NOT Muslim, the North of the country is almost entirely Muslim.

The divide is not simply or merely religious, but is also along ethnic and cultural grounds, unfortunately Sudan just happens to be where North Africa meets Central Africa, the North been mostly Arab / Muslim, the Southern half been mostly Christian, though not in the case of Southern Sudan where the main beliefs are neither Christian or Islamic.

The ethnic, religious, cultural war is not new in Sudan, it has gone on for most of the 20th / 21st century, the fighting also went on in the 19th century.

I suspect that Sudan ought not to realy exist at all, upon independence the Northern portion of the country should have formed a union with Egypt, whilst the Southern regions ought to have been divided along cultural lines between Ethiopia, Uganda, Congo and CER.

Not unlike the Country we live in. There is "London" and then there is "all those other places".

Sudan today complains about Israeli planes attacking its territory on four recent occasions.

"People are saying" that Sudan has been transporting Arms from Iran and sending them on to Ghaza.

If it serves to heal the rift between North and South Sudan, little harm will have been done.
