Mitt Romney joins calls for US candidate to quit race

US Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has called on embattled congressman Todd Akin to withdraw from the race for a Senate seat in Missouri.

He is defying intense pressure from his own party to leave the race, accusing people of over-reacting.

Correspondents say Republicans fear the backlash could sink their bid to win control of the US Senate in November

… on Sunday, [Akin] was asked by a local news station if he would support abortions for women who have been raped.

The 65-year-old lawmaker replied: "It seems to me, from what I understand from doctors, that is really rare.

"If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has said Mr Akin's claim "contradicts basic biological truths".

Does Akin’s comment have any biological/physiological validity?

How should rape be defined? Should rape be excluded from proposed exceptions to proposed anti-abortion legislation?

Should Akin withdraw from the Senate race or should he proceed and allow We the People of Missouri to decide in November 2012? If Akin withdraws, should he also resign his seat in the House of Representatives?

How will Akin’s comment affect the composition of the Senate in January 2013? How will Akin’s comment affect who is sworn in as President of the United States on 20 January 2013?

Looks like Akin is on is todd then,(todd means on is own) no one appears to want him. Rape is rape in every shape and form, if the victim is impregnated, she should be allowed to have it removed, if she so wishes. Really it has nothing to do with anyone else, especially the government and lawyers. To some women, it would be like a cancer or tumour, they need it removed immediatly.

The Republicans have been walking the razor's edge with female voters to begin with. Remember too that Aiken also signed a bill which would have redefined rape as being "forcible" (i.e. involving actual physical violence). This means that if a man intimidated a woman into having non-consensual sex, say, by waving a gun around ... or if she were drugged with a "date rape" drug ... or if she were passed out from alcohol or otherwise incapacitated, it would not be considered rape. The bill was so heinous that it was voted down almost immediately. Yep, same guy voted "yes" on this bill.

So we're not just talking about a verbal typo here. His political stance has always reflected this primitive view based on junk science. He graduated with a seminary degree, not a biology degree.

But there are two issues about Akin that should be pondered.

The first is: If he is against abortion, that's fine. It's his opinion. What angers people like me (women) about what he said was his appeal to junk science in order to justify his stance. It makes him sound like an ignorant dullard without even the most fundamental, junior high knowledge of biology. Should he get into office, what other nonsensical garbage will he spew, what other scientific lies will he concoct to hoodwink Americans into voting for whatever idiotic bill he proposes?

The second is this: Why not just come clean and say = I am against abortion even if the pregnancy was a result of rape? If that's what he believes, then just say it. I find it dishonest that he's looking for some bizarre "back door" justification for his belief - almost as if he's uncertain of his own convictions. Perhaps subconsciously he knows forcing a mother to carry a rape baby to term can be just as traumatic as the rape itself, but his religious convictions prevents him from acknowledging that fact? If he, indeed, feels this strongly against abortion, why does he need to rely on junk science and plain old bullshit to argue his point of view? Is his religion not enough?

So yeah ... if the Republicans had a ghost of a chance to win over the female vote - over half the population (and women vote more than men), they had no choice than to distance themselves from Aiken.

Also realize, too, that Aiken still believes what he believes, and now we all know what that is. He cannot put the toothpaste back in the tube. There are no "take backs" in politics.

calls for congressman Todd Akin to quit Senate race

Does the Republican Party have a "hot-line" to Britain's Conservatives? Some individuals among them seem interchangeable.

Shirina,

Akin is already in office as a congressman (for Brits, congressman / congresswoman / congressperson are the common terms for United States Representatives, roughly equivalent to your Members of Parliament). Should he resign that seat post haste?

Funny that folks like Akin don’t ask folks like me about necessary exceptions to proposed anti-abortion legislation. Perhaps that’s because folks like Akin know that reality trumps ideology.

I'm on the fence about whether he should resign. Probably not, but running again ... eh, I don't think so. Other senators have resigned for saying similar things. The guy from Vermont who said we should ship all of the disabled and mentally ill to Siberia comes to mind.

Shirina,

Please read the portion of Article 1 of the US Constitution which lays out the responsibility of each House in regards to seating and disciplining its members. Akin is a congressman; I think that the provisions of Article 1 require the House to consider unseating the bum. I’d like to know what you think.

United States Constitution, Article 1, Section 5, Paragraphs 1,2:

Each House shall be the Judge of the Elections, Returns and Qualifications of its own Members, and a Majority of each shall constitute a Quorum to do Business; but a smaller number may adjourn from day to day, and may be authorized to compel the Attendance of absent Members, in such Manner, and under such Penalties as each House may provide.

Each House may determine the Rules of its Proceedings, punish its Members for disorderly Behavior, and, with the Concurrence of two-thirds, expel a Member.
