Lionel Messi.....the best ever??
Having watched the master class Lionel Messi put on last night for Barca...scoring 5 goals. I have to ask, is he the best player of all time?
In my opinion he is...he makes the game look so easy and no one can get near him. My dream now is to see him wearing the black and white stripes and running out at St.James' Park.....(Dream on blueturando)

Greatest player for a long time, possibly ever. But how do you compare. The conditions, pitches, clothing, boots and balls (excuse my language) are all to the modern day players advantage. I remember Stanley Matthews drifting past players in his heavy toecapped, heavily leather studded and dubbined football boots, with a heavy stodgy leather laced football. What might he and others have achieved in todays conditions. Undersoil drainage and heating. Lightweight boots and ball. All the training and expertise that goes into todays footballer.
We'll never know.

I guess we wont Trev, but I can honestly say I haven't seen anyone better in 45 years on this Earth......apart from Malcolm McDonald at Newcastle maybe
I think I will get my thinking cap on and post my alltime line up and see if any others agree

Sports Direct Arena now Bloo!
how it can be thought that the name change can paper over the cracks, I just do not know.
Offishaeell (Official) line is, that as Newcastle is to be utilised in the olympics or summfin' the name change is an advertising ploy!
loads of unrest here about it, but it will blow over just as the fracas over the name change in Sunderland to Stadium of S er S er GOTIT!! Light

Such a lot of fuss about a player who only has a transfer fee of €25 million.
And what's he got to do with the Falklands question anyway?

Re: Lionel Messi.....the best ever??
Mr Messi can thank his lucky stars that my soccer days are now gone or it would be no contest...
As trevor suggests it is very difficult to judge across eras just who is eg the 'greatest midfielder/forward of all time'. Messi is an exceptionally skilful player who may have been just as good even if he had been faced with the likes of Norman Hunter or Ron Harris et al ad infinitum trying to amputate his legs at the knee.
But what of outfield defenders and goalkeepers? Clearly, Peter Shilton was the best 'between the sticks' , imho, and many would say that Franco Baresi was the best tactical defender...

Sad how much money talks, even in sport.
Been talking to the 'boss' upstairs. He's thinking of taking over my local football club. Then the ground will be called 'Paradise Park'. He'll keep in the backgound of course as a 'silent partner'.

I object to you talking about Ron Harris like that. Wasn't he the one who said 'sorry' before he went into the tackle, and 'I warned you' after the tackle.
Whilst some of the oldtime tackling was a bit 'fierce' I prefer it to the 'kissing and cuddling, ducking and diving' of today. Mind you the old leather studs were a bit of a 'killer'.

Re: Lionel Messi.....the best ever??
Messi?? Best ever?? No comrades! That honour belongs to the one and only Matt Le Tissier
Re: Lionel Messi.....the best ever??
He was certainly under rated Knarky....I would put money on it that if Le Tiss was born in Brazil he would have been much more highly respected for his talents...He was too skillfull for the England team and the way we play

Re: Lionel Messi.....the best ever??
Alas, Mr Le Tissier was also too lazy! Even the Brazilians work exceptionally hard to win back the ball - on those rare occasions when they actually lose it!
'Southampton's finest' did too much training in MacDonalds to be mentioned in the same breath as Messi. Tiss can be added to the list of those like Tony Currie, Alan Hudson and Frank Worthington who could make a ball talk but which when it did, said : " All very good - but more effort for the team laddie!"...
