http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2124246/Samantha-Brick-downsides-looking-pretty-Why-women-hate-beautiful.html

It's an article written by Samantha Brick about Samantha Brick. She claims that her life is awful because she's so beautiful and she can't wait to start ageing because life will be easier when she loses her looks.

This woman is average-looking and clearly deluded. Many are using the term "narcissist"... Yup.

She's not written a follow-up article declaring that the backlash to the first one proves that she was right! How deluded can one get?!

she can't wait to start ageing

START aging? By the looks of her photos, she's been aging just fine for at least 20 years. She's no spring chicken ... or even an autumn chicken. I think she's a November chicken. I think she's one of those people who cover up all the mirrors in her house and pretends to be 19. After all, it is a well known fact that refusing to look into mirrors slows or stops the aging process. That's what I do, y'know.

I do the same, Shirina. There are only two mirrors here - one in my bedroom (not at eye level) and one in my sister's. I get a shock when I go to my mum and dad's and spot a reflection of myself in each room I enter!

She's middle aged and looks it. If she really were keen to start losing her looks, surely she'd dye her hair grey, stop wearing makeup, and stop looking after herself? Parts of her article contradict other parts.

It's amusing that what seems to be an utter quandary to her ought to be something pleasant. I think she's enjoying her issues.

In the latter article, she compares herself with Angelina Jolie. Perhaps she has a reverse of that condition whereby the person sees a fatter, uglier version of him/herself.

It's sad really, isn't it? But her attitude is so gobsmackingly dreadful that one can't help but poke fun at her!

She's not unattractive for her age, I will grant her that. I can even see how she was once very beautiful.

If you ask me, I think her "woe is me" attitude is actually a denial of her aging. So, to use some armchair psychology on this woman, I think I know what's happening. She knows her beauty is fading, and contrary to what she says about wishing to age, she is, in fact, frightened of it. I think the purpose of her article is to convince herself (rather than the reader) that she is still hot to trot. This is why you see the contradictions. You are absolutely right in saying that, if she were tired of being pretty, there are many things she could do to make herself unattractive. Viola! Problem solved. Yet she knows, as I know, that the defining trait of femininity is beauty. I'm not so sure I like that notion, but it exists nonetheless. Some folks of my native culture believe in reincarnation, and when I was little, I used to tell my mother that the last thing I would want to be reincarnated as would be an ugly female. I have witnessed how poorly unattractive women are often treated, and I didn't want that! My mother was also once very beautiful, but she is aging as well. I was with her the first time someone called her "ma'am" instead of "miss," and it had a profound affect on her. She moped around for weeks until the despondency eventually faded.

For those who have relied on their beauty to get through life, losing it (as we all do) is a traumatic experience. It is like suddenly becoming disabled. Samantha Brick is raging at the inevitable. She reminds me of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Paralyzed from the waist down by polio, he was in constant denial of his paralysis and swore he would eventually walk again. The difference is that Roosevelt's way of dealing with it is considered noble and inspirational. Samantha? Well ... not so much.

As for mirrors, yeah, I only look into one when it is necessary, mainly at the start of my day. I remember in high school, walking into the bathroom and seeing a gaggle of girls clustered around the mirrors applying make-up, fluffing their hair, checking their mascara, etc. Sure, I would glance into the mirror just to make sure nothing was completely amiss, but unless I had flyaway hair or food stuck to my face, I just kept right on walking.

Take care, blamhappy (quite an unusual name!).

It's "iamhappy" with a "B" at the beginning and a capital "i". Haha! It sounds like a bizarre, made-up word, but it's that simple.

I started out life as "iamhappy" on Totalise back in 1999 when Mum and Dad bought our first PC. I then joined AOL and "iamhappy" was taken. The first alternative suggestion was to stick the "B" at the beginning. I've been Blamhappy ever since. It's a safe choice - not a screen name that anyone else ever seems to think of!

Yes, there's a LOT of psychological analysis to be done on the Samantha Brick phenomenon. I expect that it'll provide material for a great assignment for someone! Although I think there is narcissism there, there has to be more going on. Like you say, there's probably a dramatic realisation somewhere in her brain that she's not actually beautiful, but thus far, she is converting the negative into a positive and then complaining about it. Attack is the best form of defence, after all!

But... the fact remains that it makes her thoroughly unlikable, and it's simply bizarre that she seems unable to process the criticism of her. I reckon one day the truth will hit her and she'll feel a right wally! It's lucky she lives in France, methinks.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and if you sit regularly in front of a mirror, it's starts to be an obsession. Reflection in a mirror or water can have the same result, Narcissus springs to mind, i am in love with my mirror, well the person that reflect from it. Very Happy

I consider myself to be a very ordinary looking person, if not slightly less than that. I'm not the ugliest you'll find, but there are plenty that are way better looking. I'm ok with where I am on the scale though, because I've always known that if a man says he likes me, it's for "me", rather than for my looks.

There is a guy at work I know. We're in the same building, but on different teams. I knew who he was but hadn't really talked to him before. The first time we *did* talk (over our internal IM client), he sent me about 10 pictures of himself, all with either no shirt or in a tank top, showing himself rock climbing, pretending to wrestle a gator, hiking, etc. He also sent me a newspaper article detailing how he'd saved some people whose car had ended up in a creek.

My first thoughts were:
1. Who has this many pictures of themselves this easily accessible?
2. Who would send them to someone they really don't know other than by sight?
3. Does he think I'll be impressed? Attracted? Why would he care if I'm either one?

He later sent me a friend request on Facebook. I wound up deleting him after a month or so because I just couldn't stand the narcissism a second longer.

Little girl and her mother were looking at a family photo of the female side of the family'

'Mummy', said the little girl, 'did God make Grandma'. 'Yes dear' said mummy.

'And did he make you'. 'Yes dear' he did.

'Did he make me' she asked. 'Yes dear, he made you'.

'Mm', said the little girl looking at the photo, 'He's getting better, isn't he'.

Haha! It comes across like an understatement - like they're trying to be polite.

She seems to think that her article won't annoy anyone in a place like LA. I think perhaps there'd be less sarcasm and more gasps over there, but I can't see them embracing the article either.

Here she is being interviewed on This Morning:

http://www.itv.com/thismorning/life/samantha-brick-the-trouble-with-being-beautiful/

What do you do when the country tells you that you're wrong and deluded? Become a little bit humble and try to sell the nicer aspects of your personality? Or stand by the article and consequently come across as arrogant?

It turns out the friends she was talking about were the ones in France. I'm a bit baffled really - she reckons they're still friends, but in the article, she slags 'em all off.

I've had experiences similar to those described, but I'd never complain about them! And they certainly don't happen all the time either!

She back tracked a little in the interview anyway though - she said she was putting half a dozen experiences that had happened over her 41 years of life into one article. Although that is a contradiction with what she says in the article, it sounds a lot more realistic.

She's fairly attractive, and I'm sure men have bought her flowers and paid for drinks etc. I'm also sure a few women have been jealous of her. She makes it sound like a dreadful ordeal though, and I feel that that is pure fantasy on her part.

She seemed nervous and shaken on This Morning. I felt sorry for her because she's not quite all there.

On a bit more serious note, however, I can understand and appreciate the pitfalls of being pretty or beautiful ... even cute! Like with everything else, beauty can be a double-edged sword. You tend to attract more men who are only interested in sex. You tend to attract the attention of people that, quite often, are people whose attention you simply don't want. You always have to wonder if your achievements and accomplishments were a result of your beauty rather than your talent - and others wonder the same thing. Other women do tend to be jealous of you, and as a result, can make your life a living hell. It can also make it more difficult to have a healthy romantic relationship; men tend to be more possessive and controlling than they would ordinarily be. Sometimes men find it more difficult to trust you, and because you have so many options and offers, the man knows you could leave him at any time if something better comes along. Instead of making the man more confident that you have chosen him, he actually becomes less confident in himself, doubting his ability to keep you interested in him.

And then there is the classic "beauty vs. brains" stereotype. Sometimes the things you say, the opinions you have, are summarily dismissed because women cannot be BOTH beautiful and intelligent at the same time. In addition, people are less likely to listen to your problems. They think someone beautiful automatically lives a charmed life ... "what could YOU possibly have to complain about? Just look at you!" They don't understand that beautiful people can be lonely, afraid, depressed, and insecure.

Nothing in life is all good with no downside, beauty being no exception. What's more, it's nigh impossible to talk about the problems of beauty without admitting you know you're beautiful. That tends to turn people off for the same reasons people are turned off by Samantha Brick. One is forced into a corner of false modesty and contradictory humbleness. People are far more attracted to the beautiful girl who just doesn't get how beautiful she actually is as opposed to the girl who understands what she has been gifted with.

All of these things really do happen, but the mistake Samantha made was going public with her thoughts and bringing down a lot of scorn upon herself. Her problems are best shared only with those closest to her, those that know her and understand her. The public at large will never be kind or empathetic to a person who thinks she is just too beautiful. It's the same sort of scorn one has for the extremely wealthy who complain about being rich ... because there are billions of people (literally) who are thinking to themselves, "Well, if I had that kind of money (or beauty) I wouldn't be complaining!" It makes Samantha sound ungrateful, for if given the choice, I would much rather deal with the pitfalls of beauty than be ugly ... or even average!

She isn't beautiful though, is she? She's attractive, but not to the extent that she's irresistible to all men. I know there's the argument of "it's in the eye of the beholder", but there are limits and, if we're being brutally honest, she doesn't fall into that category. Indeed, during that interview, one of the cringeworthy aspects for me was that the two women disagreeing with her were more attractive than she is.

...And that leads me to assume that she hasn't suffered as she claims to have done and, instead, actually just has a massively over-inflated opinion of herself.

I do understand the pitfalls of being extremely pretty; I've had plenty of problems with men and I'm less attractive than Samantha Brick. I haven't really had problems with women's jealousy though - I think that's firmly in the territory of the extremely pretty women!

To add, Samantha also back tracked on the purpose of her article. She claimed in the interview that it was to discuss the phenomenon of the jealousy faced by attractive women. Actually, the article was all about herself and how awful it was being her. It was cringeworthy and patently ridiculous.

Oftenwrong , not to bore the pants of members , regarding recording , the digital medium is way too clean sounding , hence studio's still use analogue 24 track to bounce the digital signal down too , this warms the sound , talk about one step forward , ten steps back ha ha .MP3s are great for storing thousands of tracks , but vinyl still has an experience audio wise that MP3s cannot achieve.
I work day in day out with digital , but enjoy listening to retro recordings from the sixties and seventies.
Music today , especially top 40 stuff is so sterile it numbs my ears . Regarding Youtube I have to limit my time on there or I get no work done , great to see all the talent around the world , but lot's of mediocre stuff also.
Also for an up and coming artist , seeing the raw talent can also have a downside, some veer into a inferiority complex , after seeing someone else who may be super talented on Youtube , so it has it's good points and bad in respect.

I have most enjoyed reading Blamhappy's response to Samantha Brick , OMG , what's that I hear on the grapevine Samantha wants to record an album,
aarrrggggghhhhhhhhh...............only joking , or am I , dum dum dum ha ha . Wink

I suppose we all have different tastes.

I play a lot of games on the computer, so I talk quite a bit to the overall gaming community. And there are those who still claim that old games from the Atari 2600, with its highly repetitive game play and pixelated graphics are SOO much better than modern games.

Of course, I think that's absolute rubbish. I'd like to see an Atari 2600 invented in the 70's play a game that simulates captaining a German U-Boat or an Allied submarine during WWII right down to having to solve the trigonometry involved in making a torpedo shot! Old is great for nostalgia, but it isn't always "better." study

There's nothing like the early 20th century recordings of people like Caruso and Gigli. An experience not to be missed. Not the cleaned up editions you get today.

Listening to Caruso sing vesti la giubba is the nearest thing to heaven!

Jussi Björling , Swedish tenor, his voice was as near perfection , so much so that Caruso's widow Dorothy said Jussi was the only singer worthy of the Carusso crown , on first hearing him some years ago , his voice blew me away , like the great man before him.

Regarding vinyl , I know people who have spent as much as £40 thousand pounds on a turntable alone , these people are connoisseur's , the sound quality / reproduction with this price of equipment competes with CDs and above.

As for the Atari , well I used to make music with an Atari 1040 back in the early 90s used it for sequencing synths and drum machines , people still use them today.
I put mine in the trash ha ha .

I have an old 78 of Beniamino Gigli singing the main Tenor Role in La Cavelaria Rusticana, I also have a modern re-mastered version of the same, and must admit that I will listen to the re-mastered edition rather than the original. My Mother who is Italian fully agrees with me. I am sure that when the great Beniamino Gigli sang any aria live, it sounded more like the re-mastered version, not the old version. It is I suppose purely a matter of taste and choice.

Adele, firstly Hello and welcome to cutting edge. I must concur that Vesti La Giubba is one of the best aria’s purely on an emotional level, but for me Luciano Pavarotti’s version is best, possibly because his accent and clarity is almost the same as my Family’s as he comes from the same region Romagna, my second choice would be Giuseppe di Stefano for pure emotion. I could never be critical of the great Caruso, its just a personal preference. My Mothers favourite is in fact Placido Domingo as she says he has a very romantic voice and he’s not even Italian.
