Nice places to visit before you die
Visit Switzerland. No, I don’t mean get a one-way ticket to Zurich for some treatment at the Dignitas clinic, but make a trip to the Bernese Oberland of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau.
Take the 30-minute gondola ride up from Grindelwald to Mannlichen. Enjoy a cold beer at the mountain restaurant, then make the mostly flat 60-minute walk to Kleine Scheidegg, facing the Eiger most of the time. From Kleine Scheidegg, a train ride takes you back down to Grindelwald in about 40 minutes.
If you stay in Grindelwald, you can do that in a morning and then take a train down to Interlaken (literally meaning ‘between lakes’) in about 35 minutes, for a ride on a paddle steamer on either Lake Thun or Lake Brienz.
Flights to Zurich or Geneva take just over an hour from Heathrow (with British Airways) or Gatwick (with Easy Jet), or you can take the Eurostar from St Pancras International and change in Paris to a TGV to Geneva or Lausanne.
Switzerland is expensive, particularly as the effects of more quantitative easing will further devalue the pound and make the exchange rate unfavourable, but the cost is justified by the unforgettable experience.

Its always good to visit other places, learn about history, culture and see a different view, a different way of life, experience a different climate, see somewhere that s famous or well known.
But at the end of the day I live on the edge of the North York Moors national park, and my favorite place is the views from The Lion Inn pub high up on blakey ridge, the road is the highest accross the moors from Castleton to Hutton le Hole - very nice in summer, but can be a dangerous road in winter.

Loch Tummel and the Queen's View.
This place always soothes all the angst in me!!

Hutton le Hole is an enchanting place, we were camped at Kirbymoorside and spent a pleasant Sunday at the car boot fair and in the cafe. The stream/river/beck through the village just adds to the majic!

Maybe it’s nice, maybe it’s not, but I wouldn’t “start no trouble” in this Texas town.

Re: Nice places to visit before you die
Take a return visit - after some 30 years to the Ptarmigan restaurant on the top of Cairngorm.
Hopefully again on a clear day
It has always been an ambition to visit the Shelter Stone http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1045961 the walk from Aviemore to Braemar through the Lairig Ghru Pass http://walking.visitscotland.com/walks/cairngorms/lairig_ghru_northwards1 Mainly because my late father signed the visitor book in 1949. Start from Coylumbridge Hotel near Loch Morlich. This is one of Prince Philips hideaways, and I remember him flying the RAF Helicopter he used as transport. This at the time King Hussein of Jordan was gaining his instrument flying tickets at Perth aerodrome. (It was unusual for an Hotel in Scotland to have it's own heli pad Skibo and Gleneagles being others that come to mind - even now VERY expensive places to DRINK in let alone stay in.

Coming FROM the Isles, across the Minches, the view is likely to be obscured by other passengers being seasick.

A wide-ranging opinion-poll sampled while I was washing the car, reveals that happiest memories are not necessarily of PLACES, but of being in congenial company while in such places.

Re: Nice places to visit before you die
Spend a long weekend on the Norfolk Broads - every troubled soul should have the chance to sit and watch the swifts and swallows swooping after flies, while listening to the gentle lap of water and enjoying the gracious fading of another perfect day.
Even when it's cold and windy, there are moments of serenity and just downright beauty that bring a tear to the eye.

After World War I, under the Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye Meran became part of the Kingdom of Italy with the rest of the southern part of the former Cisleithanian crown land of Tyrol.
Presumably they also speak Italian.

Re: Nice places to visit before you die
In my experience, "nice places" are often those which you shared with nice people.
Fond memories of a time and place are usually linked to the company in which they were enjoyed.
Reading about e.g. the Amalfi Coast is not the same as recalling a visit with amiable companions.

Clovelly in north devon,
Like oftenwrong says, the place is nice and I went with some very nice people too.
I'm afraid that I've never been abroad, I don't know whether it's too late at my age, especially with my medical conditions.

'England' is composed of foreigners, and if I go abroad they think I am German. Ceredigion and Dublin are the only places to go.boatlady wrote:Abroad - full of foreigners - you can see foreigners in England now

Last chance to fly on World's shortest International flight
It probably seemed a good idea at the time.

Re: Nice places to visit before you die
It sounds like a crazy idea. As some of you are aware, I know Friedrichshafen like the back of my hand, and you can cross the Bodensee (Lake Constance) to Romanshorn in Switzerland on a ferry in 41 minutes. A few steps away is the railway station, from where the train journey to St Gallen is about 30 minutes.
Yes, it's longer than an eight-minute flight, but that requires getting to the required airport, going through check-in and security procedures and no doubt waiting in a departure lounge. Apart from environmental considerations, I can see why the service is being discontinued!
