Geography word game
First topic message reminder :
Name a geographical landmark that starts with the last letter of the place listed before it. (Can be anywhere in the world.)
So - Whitby Abbey could be followed by York Minster.
'R' landmark anyone?

Re: Geography word game
Error of syntax. When referring to the two alternative forms of spelling, either of them is capable of being correct, depending upon circumstances and/or context, but not both of them simultaneously in the same context.

Tim buck two, does it really matter how it was spelt so long as you know what it meant.

I bucked one and Tim Bucked two....

Re: Geography word game
Wiki say: Over the centuries, the spelling of Timbuktu has varied a great deal: from Tenbuch on the Catalan Atlas (1375), to traveller Antonio Malfante's Thambet, used in a letter he wrote in 1447 and also adopted by Alvise Cadamosto in his Voyages of Cadamosto, to Heinrich Barth's Timbúktu and Timbu'ktu. As well as its spelling, Timbuktu's etymology is still open to discussion.[2] At least four possible origins of the name of Timbuktu have been described.

In this game it does, as one spelling, “Timbuktu” (the spelling chosen by OW), ends in “u”, while the other spelling, “Timbuctoo”, ends in “o.” Both are correct; for this reason, I included both.
By the way, I’m with you. I prefer “Timbuctu”, which apparently is incorrect regardless of the fact that I’ve spelt it that way since nineteen something or the other, way back when “homey could hoop.”

Observation: does it really matter how it was spelt so long as you know what it meant?
This is a spelling game, in the English language and for amusement, so let's not get too heavy. Some place-names will be a phonetic approximation of a local word which may be written in cyrilic script or arabic. It would be unnecessarily confusing to admit exotic (though accurate) spellings like Sevilla or Den Haag, (The Hague)

Longforgan
Between Perth and Dundee, when driving the bus, I asked a lady passenger where Short Forgan was. She looked at me as if I had suddenly grown 3 Heads!!!
In the following 18 months she never did embark in any kind of conversation with me! I sometimes have to think she is re-incarnated in my avtar!
