Sigmund Freud would have a field day and David Cameron must be kicking himself. All that hard work and then you let a truth slip out that you’ve tried so hard to keep covered up.

Cameron's massive 'Freudian slip': 'raising more for the rich' Camero10
All that hard work, and then THIS!

On Wednesdays when Parliament is in session, the Prime Minister (unless otherwise engaged) has a half-hour session called ‘Prime Minister’s Questions’, or PMQs. There’s a reason they don’t call it Prime Minister’s Answers – Cameron will never actually answer a question he’s been asked by the opposition if he can avoid it, and sometimes the circumlocutions, non-sequiturs and tortured phraseology he’ll use to try to make it sound like an answer without actually addressing the issue raised are enough to give me a headache,

But just occasionally, the pain can be worth it. Yesterday, David Cameron suffered a classic Freudian slip – you know, those moments when you mean to say one thing, but something else slips out that gives away your real feelings or opinion. It was so good that it seemed worth sharing.

David Cameron was trying to make up down, and black white, trying to ridicule Ed Miliband’s accusation that the Tories’ tax policies are hitting ordinary people hardest. Here’s the passage in question, which you can read in full on the Hansard record:

He has obviously got a short memory, because I explained to him last week that under his plans for the 50p tax rate, millionaires paid £7 billion less in tax than they did previously. The point of raising taxes is to pay for public services. We are raising more money for the rich, but where he is really so profoundly wrong is in the choice that he has decided to make.

Yes, you read that right: ‘raising more money for the rich’. According to Hansard, the official record of Parliamentary goings-on, the Prime Minister said his party is raising more money for the rich. ‘Surely,’ I thought, ‘that can’t be right – he must have said ‘from’!’

But no – I just listened to it on BBC Parliament, where I’d recorded it yesterday, and that’s exactly what he says.

We’ve seen Cameron’s temper before – how he turns bright red and yells if he’s feeling vulnerable, a classic bully-boy reaction. But it’s clear that it’s not the only way that his self-control can slip. The truth, as they say, will out – and clearly this particular truth has been bubbling under the surface like the Old Faithful geyser, just waiting for its moment.

Well, they also say that confession is good for the soul, so perhaps Cameron’s soul feels a little easier today. Assuming he has one. Hopefully, it’s not good for his and his party’s electoral chances, though – so spread the word.

We all knew it, but many are still fooled and it's rare you get the truth from a Tory, even inadvertently!

Maybe I'm different from others when they got into power in May 5th 2010 by the 11th May 2010 I was a Labour party member, I had a good idea what was about to come and my intuition was SPOT on, just so you know I lived through the 18 years of the Maggot.

This may surprise you, but I’m not keen on milking Cameron’s recent slip of the tongue, Freudian or otherwise.

I attacked the Tories on MSN when they banged on and on about Gordon Brown’s “saved the world” slip, and I was disgusted with the way that they laughed at Ed Balls last week, not just for his stammer, but for saying "the national deficit is not rising", when he clearly meant the opposite.

We’re better than this, aren’t we? We have good arguments to put forward. Austerity isn’t working, it’s never worked anywhere and never will; it’s just an excuse for pursuing right-wing ideology. The policies of Iain Duncan Smith are cruel and amount to the persecution of the poor and disabled, an obscenity in any civilised society. We have the most corrupt, most dishonest, government in living memory, and after the disaster that was John Major, that’s saying something. We have far more profound issues with which to slaughter this aberration of a government; we don’t need to rely on slips of the tongue.

You probably have a point, mate. But, today at least, any means short of lowering ourselves to the Tories' level and lying, seems like a fair means to an end. If the slip went viral and led to Cameron becoming a figure of ridicule even to the politically uninterested, I could live with that. For the record, I didn't blame the Tories for going after Brown for 'we saved the world' - it helped them bring down a government they hated, which is understandable even if I think they're idiots or worse.

You know I'm all for serious discourse and reasoned, well-researched debate (or polemic, on occasion), but there are still too many people who fall for the whole skivers/strivers, 'closed curtain' stuff because they're too lazy to think it through - but they might not be too lazy to watch a viral video of Cameron saying something which, let's face it, probably was a Freudian slip.

I respect your opinion, though - and how you expressed it.

David Heath, the deputy Leader of the House, said the Chancellor had the “capacity to get up one’s nose” and did not appreciate what it was like to lose £1,000 a year – the value of the cut in child benefit for higher earners.

Paul Burstow, the care minister, told reporters from The Daily Telegraph: “I don’t want you to trust David Cameron.” And Andrew Stunell, the local government minister, said he did not know where the Prime Minister stood on the “sincerity monitor”.

Norman Baker, the transport minister, even privately compared the Conservatives within government to the South African apartheid regime, claiming that it was his job to campaign from the “inside”.

The disclosures come on the third day of this newspaper’s investigation into the true feelings of senior Liberal Democrats towards the Coalition.

The deep personal animosity and distrust at the highest level of government between ministerial colleagues can be disclosed today. Their remarks were made during covertly recorded conversations with two undercover reporters posing as concerned Liberal Democrat voters.

Lol Lol Lol!

These are rather funny Mr Hornby.

I don't think Cameron has any intention of raising money to benefit the poor in any way shape or form. His people are the rich, the idle rich and the profiteers who don't believe in a fair day's pay for a fair day's work ( that old protestant work ethic that kept us all in it together ) but in driving down costs and upping profits from the premiss that there is no such thing as a fair price - only what the buyer is willing to pay.

Funny you should say that, Redflag. Gideon is failing to learn the mistakes of past Tory Chancellors like Nigel Lawson, who precipitated the "negative-equity" house-price crash by scrapping the tax allowance on mortgage interest. (Lawson was succeeded by the dynamic John Major in that post.)

Osborne's whizz-bang idea of subsidising first-time buyers will be impossible to stop without a resulting crash in property values.
