Which of the United Kingdom newspapers do you read, and why?
Hello. Long time no type. I hope I finally have my forum name and password straightened out and can engage in a little discussion without a fight at the gate . It all comes from being too used to proboards but I'll keep trying.
I've started this thread to ask for information. Which of the United Kingdom newspapers do you read and why?
I need to keep up with what's going on without getting news and views through a politically and socially tilted source.
Information and opinion will be appreciated.
all the best,
Beth

Beth I read the Daily Mirror every day at the moment its the only one that is not biased against the Labour party, most of the rest only print what Tory HQ tell them to print which is more than likely a just vile and a pile of crap and smear against Ed Miliband and the Labour party. That is one of the reasons for saying Ed will not make a good PM and the Labour party will crash the car, when Ed gets into power on the 7th May he will prove the Tories to be BLATANT LIARS for the whole of the UK to see then maybe they will find out what other LIES they have told the UK since 2010.
I live in Scotland so you would think I would read the Daily Record sister paper to the Daily Mirror, but I get all the Scottish news on TV so by reading the Daily Mirror I keep up with the news from down south. Kevin Maguire page Paul Routledge Roz Wynn Jones & Brian Reade page is always full of what is happening in England that is how I know that England is suffering worse than Scotland but we do not have things much better with the SNP controlling & running Scotland.
I hope this helps in your quest Beth & Welcome to Cutting Edge.

Nice to meet you, Beth
I think Red's right, at present, and the Daily Mirror seems to be the only paper that is definitely not pro-Tory - however, it is definitely pro-Labour and is also a tabloid, so you can't look for detailed analysis.
I usually look at the Mirror, but also check out the broadsheets online - I find the Guardian and the Independent are worth looking at as they will go into detail - it's also worth looking at the readers' comments, because on a lot of topics (what with an election coming up) opinions are quite polarised.
It's also worth checking out both the New Statesman and the Spectator which you can look at free online for opinion pieces and interviews. The New Statesman will give you a broadly left-inclined perspective, while the Spectator will provide a right-inclined view.
I'm not aware currently of any completely unbiased news source - even the BBC seems to have an axe to grind these days

Might be worth mentioning that many British newspapers have an internet edition, though some are pay-walled, particularly the Murdoch press.

Newspaper sales in the UK are declining at the rate of about 8% a year; more details here:-

I must admit that I haven’t bought a newspaper for about ten years, but if I did it would be either ‘The Guardian’ or ‘The Independent’. When my neighbours go away I feed their cat, and as they don’t bother to cancel their ‘Daily Telegraph’ (I think they pay by annual subscription), I get to read that occasionally. I don’t much like it - it's far too right-wing for my taste - but it does have a good reputation for sports coverage.
85% of the newspaper circulation in the UK is in the hands of Rupert Murdoch, Lord Rothermere and the Barclay brothers, which isn’t very healthy in a so-called democracy. ‘The Sun’ is a particularly nasty, offensive publication, and another one to avoid is ‘The Daily Mail’:-

I tend to get my news from TV bulletins, links posted on Twitter and these two sites:-
