Re: Extremely difficult quiz questions
This appears to be Pieter Bruegel in The Peasant Wedding - a little matter I would never have known from simple memory, of course.

Re: Extremely difficult quiz questions
Yes indeed, but are we talking about Peter Brueghel, or Jan Brueghel the Elder, or indeed Jan Brueghel the Younger; nicknamed "Velvet" Brueghel, "Flower" Brueghel, and "Paradise" Brueghel.
I think we should be told.

Re: Extremely difficult quiz questions
It was Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The painting dates from around 1565, and the extra foot, in the bottom right hand corner, belongs to one of the food carriers.
And now for something completely different....

Ready for another question?
This symbol was very familiar to British people living at a particular juncture of the 20th. century.
Nothing to do with Pacman, so what was it used for?

An earlier symbol of austerity.

Re: Extremely difficult quiz questions
No, this was Dresden after 'Bomber' Harris had flattened it in February 1945, even though the war was as good as over:-

Re: Extremely difficult quiz questions
Not perhaps one of Britain's finest hours. The Dresden "fire storm" was perceived as an attack on the civilian population, with no direct military objective in February 1945 as the Nazi offensive was over within three months anyway. Churchill rapidly rowed himself away from personal responsibility, so all the blame fell on Bomber Command and its leader Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir Arthur Travers Harris, 1st Baronet GCB, OBE, AFC (13 April 1892 – 5 April 1984), commonly known as "Bomber" Harris by the press.
Post-war, Harris was initially denied the customary Peerage, and members of RAF Bomber Command were not awarded the gallantry medals afforded to other branches of the Services.

Re: Extremely difficult quiz questions
But where was the first pic taken - maybe the big river can help identify it? Then there is the cathedral which, although badly damaged by fourteen bombs, remained standing.
Re: Extremely difficult quiz questions
Looks maybe like Cologne, but as for the year...1945 seems likely?

Re: Extremely difficult quiz questions
The twin spires of Cologne cathedral are as emblematic as St. Pauls' Dome, so the river must be The Rhine.
The first ever 1,000 bomber raid by the RAF was conducted on Cologne on the night of 30/31 May 1942. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombing_of_Cologne_in_World_War_II
Apparently the RAF also carried out 260 other raids on Cologne during WW2.

Re: Extremely difficult quiz questions
Yes, it was Cologne (Köln, if you're a German) in 1945. It looks a little healthier these days:-

Re: Extremely difficult quiz questions
Could that be Jack (who usually wore a number 5 as I recall) and his brother Bobby? I'm fairly sure that the referee is Ken Taylor.
Re: Extremely difficult quiz questions
A great shot, but you have hit the bar and the ball has not bounced down over the line. No score yet, therefore, although you will surely have another attack on the 'defensive wall' with a re-read of the match programme vis-a-vis the official...

Re: Extremely difficult quiz questions
Okay, wrong Taylor - the referee is Jack! He used to live above the butcher's shop next door to Molineux, where Wolves play.
On second thoughts, the player on the right looks more like Billy Wright (who played for Wolves) than Bobby Charlton. I've no idea who the geezer on the left is if he's not Jack Charlton.

Re: Extremely difficult quiz questions
Yes, indeed. It is Wolverhampton referee, Jack Taylor, about to officiate a match involving the Wolverhampton Wanderers' captain, Billy Wright.
Some potential conflict of interest , surely - except that the other player also simultaneously played for the same club! The alleged Jack Charlton 'lookalike' is, in fact, George Showell, who replaced Wright at the centre of the Wolves' defence after this pre-season friendly (presumably the first team versus the reserves, which is why Taylor could officiate) in August 1959, which marked the final game of Wright's long career in the famous old gold and black shirt.

Re: Extremely difficult quiz questions
How do you solve a problem like oftenwrong? You may have noticed that some Forumotion staff were on this site yesterday doing maintenance work. They might take a dim view of anything that looks like a commercial advert; they’re the only people allowed to post such things!
Incidentally, that wouldn’t be my choice of hotel in Friedrichshafen. If anyone wants to visit that lovely little German town facing Switzerland on the Bodensee (Lake Constance), I can advise if you send me a personal message.
The photo I posted has nothing to do with Friedrichshafen and it wasn’t taken in Germany. It’s of a place that I first visited many years ago, when I was about sixteen, going on seventeen.

I wonder if this is from a less than traditional angle of the place concerned.

Re: Extremely difficult quiz questions
The maintenance men have been in again tonight. Firstly, several posts appeared twice in succession. I've deleted the 'spares'; it's against the Forumotion rules to post the same thing more than once, but their glitches are making it happen. Secondly, according to the 'last posts' on the home page, nothing has been posted on this board since February! I hope this message will rectify that.
Re: Extremely difficult quiz questions
Surely the statue is one C.Chaplin Esq.
Isn't it in London somewhere? I can't recall the exact location, but would it be in the area in which he was born?

Re: Extremely difficult quiz questions
In his London birthplace, Charles Chaplin apparently enjoyed spells as a child in the Workhouse, Phil. Not much to commemorate about that, but there is or was as you say a statue of him located in Leicester Square.
The bronze statue pictured however, erected to "Charlot" as his tramp character was known to French-speakers, is I think in the land of the Cuckoo-clock - where he died.

Re: Extremely difficult quiz questions
The statue of the left-inclined Charlie Chaplin is in Vevey, on Lake Geneva in Switzerland. That was where the four-times married, father of eleven children died on Christmas Day in 1977 at the age of 88.
