Call for superstorm board
A new quango is needed to help Britain brace itself against a once-in-a-century "solar superstorm", experts said.
Professor Paul Cannon, who chaired the Academy's working group on extreme solar weather, said: "The two challenges for government are the wide spectrum of technologies affected and the emergence of unexpected vulnerabilities as technology evolves. The Academy recommends that government sets up a Space Weather Board to oversee these issues across government departments."

I believe that such an important position with such a taxing agenda requires somebody to make tea for them on a regular basis.

I consider myself a plausible candidate for a well-paid sinecure as a member of such a quango, having suffered quite a nasty sunburn in the summer of 1975.

Spare a thought for those who sought shelter from such an occurrence in the sunny Caribbean.

Once again a light snowfall brings Britain to its knees. In Scandinavia and Alpine nations they expect freezing conditions every winter, so have developed an infrastructure around that. Here councils usually invest in snow-clearing machinery after a hard freeze, only to see it rust gently away in the depot during a succession of mild winters following.
